St. George's Monastery

The community on Mount Osui began with one man's intention: in 1992 the shepherd Ivan Shtefura decided to build a small house and a chapel here, and the head of the village council, Ivan Tsubera, allotted the land for it¹. In 1992-1993 a church of the Great Martyr George the Victorious was built on the site¹. The monastery belongs to the Khust eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and stands in the village of Kryva on Kubyntsia Street⁸.

After that the building went on almost without a break. In 1997 a cell block was raised, adjoined by a house church of the Great Martyr Barbara; on 30 March 1999, by the monastery's own account, the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church blessed the opening of the community; in 1998-2003 a bell tower went up with a chapel of the Martyr Lydia inside it; in 2003 the monastery was building a second block, and later a church of Saint Mary Magdalene, equal to the apostles, was built here¹.

The community's churches can be read from its feasts: the Great Martyr George on 23 April (6 May), the Great Martyr Barbara on 4 (17) December, the Martyr Lydia on 23 March (5 April), Saint Mary Magdalene on 22 July (4 August), and the commemoration of the icon of the Mother of God "Pantanassa" ("Queen of All") on 18 (31) August². On 4 August 2026, the day of Saint Mary Magdalene, the ruling bishop of the Khust eparchy led the festal Divine Liturgy at the monastery, with two vicar bishops, the brethren of the community and the clergy of the eparchy concelebrating⁶.

Among the community's venerated objects is an icon of the Mother of God with the host of saints the monastery honours as its heavenly patrons; it was painted by iconographers of Volyn and given to the monastery in 2003, when a local commemoration in its honour on 3 November was also blessed³. In the same year the community received a particle of the relics of the Great Martyr George, in 2004 an icon of the Great Martyr Barbara with a particle of her relics, and in 2008 an archimandrite brought from the Vatopedi monastery on Athos a copy of the image of the Mother of God "Queen of All"³. A shroud more than a hundred and fifty years old, brought to the monastery by a widow from Dubove, is kept here too³.

The monastery has sketes of its own: the skete of Saint Seraphim, founded in 2000 in the village of Roztoky, Rakhiv district; the Protection skete, founded in 2007 in the village of Kolodne, Tiachiv district; and the skete of the icon of the Mother of God "Prousiotissa", founded in 2010 in the Tiachiv district, whose venerated object is a copy of that icon from Greece⁴. In its own list of monasteries the Khust eparchy gives the Protection skete precisely as a skete of the monastery of Saint George, with a superior of its own⁵.

The daily round of services here is a long one: on Sundays and feasts matins at half past seven, the Liturgy at half past ten, and vespers and matins at five in the afternoon; on weekdays the Liturgy at six in the morning and the evening service at six⁷.
