St. Athanasius the Athonite's Convent

The convent of St Athanasius the Athonite stands in the village of Stalnivtsi in the Chernivtsi region and belongs to the Chernivtsi and Bukovyna eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church³.

The house began in 2001 as a skete of the Boyany monastery¹. In the same year a church of St Athanasius the Athonite was laid here, with a lower side-altar of the Iveron icon of the Mother of God¹.

The Boyany house, from which the Stalnivtsi skete came, arose in 1995 beside the church of the Nativity of the Theotokos in the village of Boyany: at first it existed as a sisterhood of the Boyany icon of the Mother of God, and it received the status of a monastery in 1999⁴.

By 2004 the community had three cell blocks¹. The Iveron side-altar was consecrated in 2007¹.

In 2009 the skete received the status of an independent monastery¹. In the same year, on 24 November, the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, having heard the report of Metropolitan Onufriy of Chernivtsi and Bukovyna, resolved «to bless the opening of a convent in honour of St Athanasius the Athonite in the village of Stalnivtsi»; the decision was recorded as Journal No. 70².

In the list of monasteries which the Chernivtsi eparchy kept on its own site, the house was entered as a monastery in its own right - beside the Boyany house from which it had once separated³.
